Description

A gym bag that opens only at the top is a bag you empty onto a bench every morning. This is a thirty five litre ruck built around the opposite idea: every compartment opens on a two way zip that travels a full one hundred and eighty degrees, so the bag lies flat like a clamshell and you can see the whole load at once. Ripstop Oxford face, water repellent, with a load compression system on the sides, front and base that lets a half filled bag carry like a full one.

The layout is written by people who train. Two side cup holders sized for a 750 ml bottle, a ventilated shoe compartment that keeps trainers away from clean clothes, a padded laptop interlayer for the days the bag doubles as a commuter, and a patch strip on the front for a name tape or unit patch. The interior holds two pairs of trainers, a towel, gym clothes, a meal prep box and small tools without the bag ballooning out of shape.

The base straps are the detail that separates this from a duffel. Loop a sleeping bag or a rolled mat underneath and the centre of gravity drops, which is what you want when the bag is carried on one shoulder through a car park. The air cushion belt and arcuate straps sit flat under load, and the water repellent face fabric shrugs off a wet pitch or a rainy walk to the station without needing a cover.

Volume is what a bag claims. How it carries at seventy percent full is what it delivers.

Where it belongs

A week's training kit and a laptop in the same bag, which is the actual shape of most people's day. It works as a gym ruck, a short trip carry on, a range or airsoft bag, and a boot bag for weekend sports. The ventilation in the shoe compartment matters most for anyone who changes at the gym and commutes after, and the base straps make it usable for a festival or a night in a tent when the mat has to go somewhere.

Questions buyers actually ask

Q: Will it work as a carry on for a short trip?

Yes for two to three days of clothing if you pack flat rather than roll everything. Volume is in the mid thirties, and the compression straps keep it inside the sizer when it is not full. It is soft sided, so it will not protect fragile equipment.

Q: Does the shoe compartment actually ventilate?

It is separated from the main load with a vented panel, which stops damp trainers from making everything else smell. It will not dry wet shoes; take them out when you get home rather than leaving them in the bag overnight.

Q: Is the fabric waterproof enough for a rainy commute?

The face fabric is water repellent and handles rain on a walk to the station. Seams and zips are not taped, so a long ride in heavy rain will eventually let water in at the top. A cheap cover is the right answer if you commute by bike in all weathers.

Q: How much weight can it carry comfortably?

Around ten to twelve kilos is the practical ceiling for a pack with a padded belt rather than a framed hip belt. It is designed for kit, not for expedition loads. Beyond that the straps take the weight on the shoulders rather than the hips.

Q: Can the patch strip be removed?

The strip is stitched in, and the patches attach to it with hook and loop. Leave it bare if you do not want to personalise the bag. The included patch can be swapped out or left off entirely.

Q: How do I keep the inside from smelling?

Empty it after every session rather than leaving damp kit in overnight. Wipe the interior with a mild soap solution and air dry fully open. Do not put the bag in a washing machine, since the coated fabric and the padding do not survive a spin cycle.

Capacious and tough, straps are the weak point

No issue with volume or build, and the base straps make carrying a rolled mat easy. Loaded past twelve kilos the shoulder padding starts to compress, so keep it to normal gym weight rather than expedition weight. Good value for the size.

Commuters bag and gym bag in one

Laptop in the padded interlayer, kit in the main compartment, trainers in the vented section. The compression straps stop it sagging when it is half full, which was the problem with my last holdall. Ripstop face has handled a wet pitch without soaking through.

Opens flat and I stopped unpacking on a bench

The full length two way zips are the reason I bought it and they deliver: the bag lies open and I can see the whole load. Shoe compartment keeps trainers away from clean clothes, and the bottle holders take a 750 ml bottle without stretching out.
