Description

Sheet Metal Does Not Bend Into a Curve. It has to be persuaded, and it can only be persuaded in two directions: gathered or spread. That is the whole discipline behind panel beating on a car, a motorcycle or an aircraft. This set contains both halves of that discipline, a shrinker body and a stretcher body sharing the same throat geometry, so a compound curve is worked in and out rather than hammered into shape on a sandbag.

Capacity is stated honestly. Each body handles 1.2mm mild steel, which is 18 gauge, and 1.5mm aluminium, which is 16 gauge, at full capacity rather than only at the edge of the jaw. Both machines form a radius as tight as 76mm, or three inches, and the throat depth is 25.4mm, or one inch, which decides how far in from a panel edge you can work. The set arrives as two complete bodies with one set of shrinker jaws, one set of stretcher jaws and two handles, so you are not hunting for a missing component before the first panel.

Operation is manual, and that is a feature rather than a compromise. Hand pressure gives the control that matters on thin material, because the operator feels the metal start to move before it tears. The machines are bench or stand mounted, weigh 9.6 kg net and 10.5 kg gross per shipment, and pack into a 35 by 19 by 9 cm carton. For a fabrication shop working on restoration, race car bodywork or light aircraft skins, the pair replaces a lot of hammer time with repeatable, controllable forming.

Buy the pair, because a curve is rarely only one direction.

What the Pair Does

  • ✦Complete pair: two bodies with one set of shrinker jaws, one set of stretcher jaws and two handles
  • ✦Capacity of 1.2mm or 18 gauge mild steel and 1.5mm or 16 gauge aluminium, at full jaw capacity
  • ✦Forms a radius as tight as 76mm or 3 inches
  • ✦Throat depth of 25.4mm or 1 inch for working inward from a panel edge
  • ✦Manual operation for the feel and control thin panel work demands
  • ✦Bench or stand mounted cast bodies built for repeated panel work
  • ✦Compact packing at 35 x 19 x 9 cm, 9.6 kg net and 10.5 kg gross

Where the Panel Gets Shaped

Restoration shops use the pair to reproduce wheel arch lips, door skins and boot floors that are no longer available as panels. Race car fabricators use it on aluminium bodywork where each panel exists once and cannot be ordered. Motorcycle builders use it for mudguards and tank shrouds. Aircraft and home build workshops use it for skin work in thin alloy, where the control a hand operated tool provides is worth more than the speed of a powered one. Even a general fabrication shop keeps a set for the occasional curved transition, because a curve formed deliberately saves the filler and the time that chasing a hammered shape always costs.

Fabricator Questions

Q: Can I buy the shrinker and the stretcher separately?

A: This listing is the pair, which is how most buyers start because a compound curve needs both directions. Send us a message if you need a single body and we will quote it separately.

Q: Will it handle 16 gauge steel?

A: The stated capacity is 1.2mm mild steel and 1.5mm aluminium. Steel that is slightly thicker can be worked with light multiple passes, but do not expect the tool to do at 16 gauge steel what it does at 18 gauge.

Q: How is it mounted?

A: The bodies are made to be mounted on a bench or a stand, which leaves both hands free to feed the panel. A solid mounting surface makes a visible difference to the finish, particularly on aluminium.

Q: What size radius can I form?

A: As tight as 76mm, or three inches. The throat depth of 25.4mm, or one inch, limits how far from a panel edge you can start a curve, so plan the layout of the panel before the first pass.

Q: Is this suitable for a beginner?

A: The tool is simple and the learning curve is short, but the judgement is in how much you take per pass. Work in small increments on a scrap panel first and the technique transfers quickly.

The EastSupplier Promise

Every unit in this listing is inspected and packed by our own cross-border team in China before it leaves the warehouse. We hold the stock, we handle the export paperwork, and we answer technical questions directly rather than routing you through a marketplace resolution desk.

Orders ship with tracking, and quantities above ten units are quoted individually so that shipping and duties are confirmed before you pay. If you are buying for a workshop, a studio, a fleet, or a service bay, tell us what you need and we will confirm availability, lead time, and landed cost.

Buy the pair, budget for mounting

Quality is solid and the packing was compact with no damage. Do not expect it to work well clamped to a wobbly bench, because the finish on thin alloy shows every bit of flex. Well priced for what it does.

Both directions in one set

Having the shrinker and the stretcher on the same throat depth means I stopped swapping between two machines mid panel. Jaws handle 18 gauge steel without complaint. Mounting them to a solid bench mattered more than I expected.

Made short work of a wheel arch

Reproducing a rusty wheel arch lip on a classic. The shrinker gathered the curve in a few passes and the aluminium I formed afterwards stayed smooth. Hand operation gives the control that a powered tool loses.
