Description

Load bearing is an engineering discipline. Comfort is the proof that it was done properly. A tactical pack is judged in the third hour, not the first, and the difference between a bag that is merely large and one that is genuinely carryable comes down to the harness. The Field Quartermaster carries 35 litres across an air-cushion belt system that spreads weight onto the hips rather than hanging it from the shoulders, so the pack stops pulling backward and starts sitting on the frame of the body.

The shell is a softback polyester build with a polyester lining and a full-length zipper closure down the main compartment, which lets the cavity open flat when you need to see everything at once rather than excavate from the top. Inside, three defined zones do the organising: a slot pocket for flat items, a zipper pocket for the small pieces that would otherwise migrate to the base, and a padded computer interlayer that keeps a laptop clear of the floor of the bag and away from the rest of the load.

Three colourways are available, black, green and khaki, and the detailing is kept to restrained embroidery rather than molle webbing by the metre. That is a deliberate choice. The pack is built to hold shape under load, with straps that stay where they are set and a body that does not slump when the main cavity is full. The soft handle carry strap and the menswear cut suit a wearer who loads the same kit week after week and wants the bag to disappear into the routine rather than require attention.

It is not a bag. It is a harness that happens to have a compartment.

A pack in this class is bought on three questions: where does the weight go, how is the inside divided, and does the body keep its shape when it is full. The points below answer those three in order.

What the Harness Holds

  • ✦ 35-litre main cavity in the 20 to 35 litre class, opened by a full-length zipper
  • ✦ Air cushion belt carrying system moves load onto the hips rather than the shoulders
  • ✦ Padded computer interlayer keeps a laptop off the base of the pack
  • ✦ Interior slot pocket plus interior zipper pocket for flat and small items
  • ✦ Softback polyester shell with a polyester lining and embroidered detailing
  • ✦ Three colourways: black, green and khaki
  • ✦ Menswear cut with soft handle carry straps and a travel profile

Who Carries It

The Field Quartermaster is carried by people whose kit does not change much from one day to the next. Site engineers load instruments, a laptop and paperwork and then walk between buildings. Range officers and instructors carry PPE, documents and a first aid kit and need the load to sit still while they move. Field photographers want a padded layer between a camera body and the rest of the contents. Travellers use it as the one bag that covers a business trip and a hiking afternoon without a second purchase. In every case the requirement is identical: the weight has to transfer to the hips, and the interior has to be divided so that nothing has to be searched for.

Operators' Questions

Q: How much does the air cushion harness actually change?

It transfers the load from the shoulders and spine onto the hips. That is the difference between a full pack that can be carried for an hour and one that can be carried for a day.

Q: Will a laptop fit?

Yes. The interior includes a padded computer interlayer, so a laptop rides against the back panel and clear of the base of the pack rather than sitting loose amongst other gear.

Q: What does the interior look like inside?

There are three zones: a slot pocket for flat items, a zipper pocket for small pieces, and the padded computer interlayer. The main cavity closes with a full-length zipper.

Q: Is this a soft or framed pack?

It is a softback pack with an air cushion belt. The soft construction lets it compress against a partial load instead of holding a fixed empty volume.

Q: Is it acceptable as carry-on luggage?

The 35-litre volume is within the cabin allowance of most airlines. Confirm the published dimensions of your carrier if you intend to fly with it fully loaded.

Q: Which colours are available?

Black, green and khaki. All three use the same harness and interior layout.

Holds its shape when full

What I liked is that the body does not slump once it is packed out. Straps stay where you set them and the main compartment opens all the way down the side, so I can see everything at once.

Good interior layout

The slot pocket, zipper pocket and padded computer interlayer mean nothing ends up loose at the bottom of the bag. The 35 litre volume is right for a day of equipment. Black is the practical choice.

The hip belt is the reason to buy it

Loaded it with a laptop, instruments and paperwork and carried it around site all day. Because the air cushion belt takes the weight on the hips, my shoulders were not aching by the afternoon, which no other pack in this size has managed.
