Description

Coverage Is the Whole Point. A handheld radio is a compromise you accept until you drive out of its reach. A mobile set mounted in the vehicle is not a compromise: with an external antenna on the roof and twenty-five watts behind it, the conversation continues past the edge of the town and into the places where phone signal stops pretending.

Two bands, one box. The BJ-218 tunes 136 to 174 MHz and 400 to 480 MHz, covering the VHF and UHF services most operators actually use, with 256 memory channels for repeaters, simplex frequencies and the talk-around you keep coming back to. The display shows frequency, channel and signal strength at a glance rather than through a menu tree.

Fitted where the vehicle already is. The chassis measures roughly 22 by 17 by 10 centimetres, so it slots into a dash pocket, an overhead console or a bracket beside the gear lever. The metal body sinks heat rather than insulating it, which matters when the radio is working for a full shift in a cab with the windows up.

Buy the configuration that matches your install. The listing carries the bare radio, options with the USB programming cable, and antenna sets, with shipping routed through China or the Russian Federation. If you are not sure which bundle your installation needs, tell us the vehicle and the antenna you plan to run.

A radio you cannot reach with is furniture. Reach is the product.

Where the Relay Post Gets Fitted

It goes into vehicles that work outside network coverage: delivery vans running rural routes, farm and estate vehicles, off-road and expedition builds, and light commercial fleets that coordinate between two or more vehicles in the same valley. Volunteer radio operators use it as a fixed or mobile base station with a roof antenna, because twenty-five watts into a proper antenna outperforms a handheld with a rubber duck every time. Workshops and marinas fit it where staff need to talk across a yard without a phone call, and monitoring hobbyists use the 256 channels to keep the local repeater list loaded instead of entering frequencies by hand each shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this need a licence to transmit?

A: Licensing is entirely a matter of your jurisdiction and the band you intend to use. Check the rules that apply where you operate before transmitting, and treat receiving as the safe starting point until you have.

Q: What range should I realistically expect?

A: In a vehicle with an external roof antenna, ten to fifty kilometres is the working window, and terrain decides where in that window you land. A handheld indoors will do far less, which is the reason to mount a mobile set in the first place.

Q: Is the antenna included?

A: Not in the bare configuration. Antenna set variants are listed separately, and the antenna is where most of your performance comes from, so budget for a decent one on the roof rather than a stub on the dash.

Q: Which variant should I pick?

A: Tell us the vehicle, the band you work on and whether you already own an antenna, and we will point at the right bundle. If you are starting from nothing, take a radio-plus-antenna set rather than the bare unit.

Q: Can I programme it from a computer?

A: Yes, with the USB programming cable and the standard software for this family of radios. The keypad also accepts frequencies directly if you prefer not to carry a laptop.

Q: Does it work as a base station?

A: It can, with a suitable power supply and a fixed antenna. Many owners run one in a vehicle and keep the same model indoors for the shack.

Q: What about the country option in the variant list?

A: That selects the shipping route and the power-plug accessories where relevant. It does not change the radio's frequency coverage, so choose the origin that delivers to you most reliably.

Q: How much current does it draw on transmit?

A: Expect commercial mobile-radio consumption in the several-amp range at full power, so wire it to a fused circuit rather than a cigarette-lighter socket for permanent installs.

256 channels is plenty

Loaded the local repeaters plus the simplex frequencies we use at work and still have most of the list free. Exactly the configuration I wanted.

Programming cable is worth ordering

Setting the channels from the keypad works but the USB cable and PC software are far faster for a full list. Order it with the radio rather than after.

Metal body, no plastic creak

The chassis feels solid and it does not rattle on a rough road. The display is readable in daylight, which matters when you are driving and listening.

Twenty-five watts into a roof antenna

Mounted it in the truck with an external antenna and the difference against my handheld is night and day. Repeaters I could not reach before come in clearly now.
