Description
A drum switch is the most honest piece of electrical hardware in a workshop. It has no firmware, no display, and no way to fail quietly. You rotate the handle to forward, the motor turns one way; you rotate it to reverse, the motor turns the other. When it stops working, it is because a contact has worn, and a competent electrician can see that in thirty seconds.
This one is rated 60 amps at up to 380 volts, which covers 3 horsepower at 120 volts and 6 horsepower at 240 volts. Three positions: forward, stop, reverse, in a maintained action, so the switch stays where you put it rather than springing back. Six terminals, two straight and four cross, allow the phase swap that reversing actually requires rather than asking you to rewire the motor.
The casing is an impact-resistant plastic rated for wash-down and rain, which matters on a farm, in a boatyard, or on a machine that lives under a lean-to. It is not a sealed explosion-proof enclosure and we do not sell it as one. It is a switch that tolerates a wet workshop and a hose-down at the end of the week, which is the environment most single-phase and three-phase small motors actually live in.
Reversing a motor should not require rewiring it.
Why It Earns Its Place
- ✦ 60A contact rating at 0 to 380V for single and three-phase motors
- ✦ Rated 3HP at 120V and 6HP at 240V
- ✦ Three maintained positions: forward, stop and reverse
- ✦ Six terminals, two straight and four cross, for phase reversal
- ✦ Impact and corrosion resistant rain-proof casing
- ✦ Wash-down safe for workshops, farms and boatyards
- ✦ Handle detents are positive, so the switch cannot drift between positions

Where It Belongs
Fitted to lathes, drill presses, winches, hoists, conveyor drives, boat lifts and farm machinery where direction of rotation has to be operator-selectable rather than fixed at wiring. Single-phase reversing motors on a bench lathe are the most common application, followed by three-phase workshop equipment where a contactor-based reversing starter is overkill. Electricians buy these for retrofit jobs because the six-terminal layout accepts both the straight-through and cross-connected configurations without adding an external changeover.
Questions Buyers Ask
Q: Can it switch a three-phase motor?
A: Yes. The four cross terminals are what allow the two phases to be swapped for reversal. Confirm your motor winding and supply arrangement before wiring, and have the work done by a qualified electrician.
Q: Is it a sealed enclosure?
A: No. It is rain-proof and wash-down safe, not IP-rated explosion-proof. For outdoor permanent installation, mount it under a cover.
Q: What does maintained action mean?
A: The handle stays in the position you leave it. A spring-return switch would drop back to stop when released, which is wrong for a machine that needs to run continuously in reverse.
Q: Does it include overload protection?
A: No. This is a direction and isolation switch. Motor overload protection must be provided separately by a thermal relay or breaker.
Q: What wire gauge should I use?
A: Size the conductors to the motor's actual current rating at your supply voltage, not to the switch rating. A 60A switch on a 3HP motor is carrying far less than its capacity; the rating is headroom, not a target.
Q: Will it work on a single-phase 240V motor?
A: Yes, provided the motor is a reversible type with the appropriate winding connections. Single-phase reversing requires swapping the start winding relative to the run winding.
Q: Is the handle replaceable?
A: The handle is a moulded part of the cover assembly. It is not sold separately, but it is the most robust component on the switch and rarely the failure point.
Q: Can it be used as a main isolator?
A: It provides a visible break in the circuit and is often used that way on small machines. For lockable isolation on fixed equipment, confirm with your local electrical inspector that the enclosure meets the requirement.
