Description

Clearance Is the Quiet Argument in Every Engine Build.

The moment a set of roller rockers goes in, the stock stamped cover stops being a cover and becomes a contact point. What follows is usually a spacer, a hammer, or a set of tall covers bought in a hurry. Tall aluminium covers solve it at the source: the extra internal height clears the rocker assembly, the casting holds its shape under heat where stamped steel flexes, and the surface takes a finish that stays presentable after a few seasons of heat cycling.

These are cast aluminium, sold as a pair with the mounting bolts included, and the fitment covers the small block family that ran from 1958 to 1986: 283, 302, 305, 327, 350, 383 and 400 cubic inch engines. That span matters because the same cover has to sit flat on a gasket rail that has been through fifty years of heat and someone else's sealant. A casting that is straight out of the box saves the usual hour of chasing a leak at the back corner where nobody can see it.

Two practical notes belong with any aluminium cover. Check the OEM or interchange number against your engine before ordering, because the small block family has variations across the run, and plan on a quality gasket and a torque wrench rather than a ratchet and feel. Instructions are not included, and this is not a part for someone who has not set valve cover torque before. The reward is a top end that clears the rockers, seals properly and looks like it was chosen rather than improvised.

The right cover is the one that clears the hardware inside it, not the one that looks best on a shelf.

Where They Get Fitted

A hot rod builder fitting a roller cam to a 350 needs the height before the engine goes back in the car, and buying the covers at that point avoids a second tear down. A restoration shop working on a 1966 C10 with a 327 uses them to replace fifty year old stamped covers that no longer sit flat. A circle track team running a 383 keeps a spare pair because a cover that has been off twenty times starts to leak, and a straight casting is cheaper than a lost night before a race meeting. A marine engine builder working on a 305 uses the same part for the same clearance reason, with the polished finish holding up better than painted steel in a wet bilge.

Fitment Questions

Q: Will these clear roller rockers?

A: That is what the tall profile is for. Extra internal height is the reason to buy them over stock height covers. Confirm the height against your specific rocker assembly if you are running a particularly tall shaft setup.

Q: Which engines do they fit?

A: Small block Chevrolet from 1958 to 1986 in 283, 302, 305, 327, 350, 383 and 400 cubic inch form. Check the OEM or interchange number against your engine before ordering, because the family has variations across the run.

Q: Are gaskets and bolts included?

A: Bolts are included as a pair. Gaskets are not, and using a quality gasket matters more than most people expect on an aluminium rail.

Q: Do they need a break-in or coating?

A: No coating is required. Keep the polished surface clean, avoid abrasive pads that cut through the finish, and check the bolts again after the first few heat cycles.

Q: Can I fit these myself?

A: If you are confident setting valve cover torque and have checked rocker clearance, yes. Instructions are not included and the part is sold on the basis that fitting is done by someone familiar with the engine.

Q: Will they fit with an aftermarket intake or headers?

A: Intake side clearance is rarely the issue on a small block, but accessory brackets and heater hose routing sometimes are. Trial fit before final torque if the engine has non-standard accessories.

Finish holds up

After a season of heat cycles the polished surface still cleans up properly. Do not attack it with an abrasive pad or you will cut through the finish.

Sealed at the back corner

The back corner leak that nothing would fix is gone. A quality gasket and a torque wrench, not a ratchet and feel, is what it wanted.

Check the OEM number first

Fitment is right for my 1966 327, but read the listing properly and check the number against your engine. The pair arrived straight with bolts and went on without a fight.

Clears the roller rockers

Went on after a roller cam swap on a 350 and there is no contact inside. Cast aluminium sits flat on the rail, which my old stamped covers stopped doing years ago.
