the-sentinel-mmwave-presence-sensor
The Sentinel | 24GHz mmWave Presence Sensor for Tuya Zigbee

Motion sensors have a fundamental flaw: they only see movement. A person reading in a chair is invisible to them, and the lights go out on someone who has not moved a muscle for four minutes. The Sentinel replaces motion with presence. A 24 GHz millimetre wave radar reads micro-movement, including breathing, so a room stays lit while a body is in it and darkens only when the room is genuinely empty.

The radar is paired with passive infrared and a light sensor, and the three inputs are weighted rather than stacked. Detection reaches six metres with a 120 degree field, the beam spreads 94 degrees on the horizontal plane and 114 on the vertical, and the light sensor reads ambient conditions from zero to twelve thousand lux so a bright afternoon does not trigger the same response as a dark evening. Hold time is adjustable from ten seconds to ten minutes, which is the difference between a corridor light and a bathroom light.

Power comes from a single CR2450 coin cell, and average draw sits at or below fifty microamps, so the device runs for months rather than days on a battery it does not have to announce. It joins a Tuya or Smart Life Zigbee network, which means it can drive automations directly: presence in the study dims the hallway, presence in the hallway raises the kitchen light to a working level, and absence closes everything down without a schedule being written for it.

A room that knows you are in it is not a luxury. Home offices, reading corners, bathrooms and nurseries are the four places PIR sensors fail most often, because stillness is normal behaviour there rather than absence. Commercial buyers fit it in meeting rooms and washrooms where a schedule-based lighting system wastes energy on empty hours, and in retail fitting rooms where a light must stay on for the person inside and switch off the moment they leave. Because the light sensor is part of the same device, one unit can hold a room at a comfortable level instead of switching hard on and off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is this different from a normal PIR motion sensor?

A PIR sensor detects heat movement, so it drops a still person after its timer expires.
