Description

Every spliced wire is a small argument against entropy. Twist two conductors together, wrap them in tape, and you have created a joint that will loosen with heat cycling, collect dust and eventually arc. A closed end crimp cap settles the argument with a mechanical crimp and a sealed cap, and it does so in about four seconds.

These are the classic pigtail connectors, moulded in plastic over an aluminium insert. The procedure is short: twist the stripped conductors together, push them into the cap, crimp the body closed. The insert bites into the copper, the plastic shell insulates the end, and the finished joint resists vibration in a way that twisted tape never does.

They come in three body sizes and three pack quantities. CE1 and CE2 handle the small gauge runs found in lighting and audio, CE5 takes heavier conductor counts where several wires meet. The material is CE and RoHS compliant, and there are no declared high concern chemicals in the assembly.

A joint you cannot see is still a joint. Build it as if the whole installation depends on it, because it does.

Why Closed End Beats Tape

  • ✦Closed end construction that seals the conductor end against dust and moisture
  • ✦Aluminium insert crimped inside a moulded plastic shell for a mechanical, not adhesive, joint
  • ✦Three body sizes covering light gauge audio runs through heavier multi conductor splices
  • ✦CE and RoHS compliant material declaration
  • ✦Crimp in seconds with a standard electrician pliers or crimping tool
  • ✦Pack options from 50 to 1000 pieces for single repairs or production runs
  • ✦Prevents shorting by insulating the exposed end of a twisted splice

Where These Get Used

Automotive work is the obvious home: stereo installs, alarm and remote start wiring, trailer harnesses, auxiliary lighting. The same cap solves domestic problems, joining a new fixture to an old ceiling run, repairing a cut lamp cord, terminating a doorbell transformer line. Marine and motorcycle harnesses benefit because the sealed end tolerates vibration and spray better than an open twist. Anyone maintaining a fleet or a rental property will use the 1000 piece pack faster than expected.

Selection Questions

Q: Which size do I need for ordinary household wiring?

A: For two or three conductors of typical lighting or receptacle gauge, CE2 is the common choice. CE1 suits single small gauge pairs in audio and signal work. CE5 is for heavier bundles where four or more conductors meet.

Q: Do I need a special crimping tool?

A: A proper crimping tool gives the most reliable result, but linesman pliers will close the cap on light gauge joints. What matters is that the crimp deforms the aluminium insert around the copper rather than just squashing the plastic shell.

Q: Can these be reused?

A: No. The crimp is a one time deformation. Once the insert is compressed it will not grip a new conductor set reliably. Treat them as consumables and buy the pack size that matches your working volume.

Q: Are they suitable for mains voltage?

A: They are rated as insulating connectors and are widely used in mains wiring where local code permits closed end connectors. Code requirements differ by country, so confirm against the regulation that governs your installation before relying on them for permanent mains joints.

Q: Will the plastic crack in a hot engine bay?

A: The shell is a moulded plastic designed for electrical insulation, and it is used routinely in automotive harnesses. Keep the cap away from direct contact with exhaust components and route it as you would any other harness connector.

Q: What is the difference between CE1, CE2 and CE5?

A: Body diameter and internal insert capacity. CE1 is the smallest, CE5 the largest. Match the cap to the total bundle diameter of your twisted conductors, not to the wire count alone, because insulation thickness varies by gauge.

Q: Do they work on both stranded and solid wire?

A: Yes, and both are common in the same harness. Solid wire holds a twist well and deforms predictably under the insert. Stranded wire needs a firm twist before insertion so the strands do not splay inside the cap, and slightly more crimp pressure to consolidate them. Never tin a stranded bundle before crimping a closed end cap, since solder changes how the insert bites.

Q: How many caps should one splice use?

A: One cap per junction, regardless of how many conductors feed it, provided they fit inside the body without forcing. If the bundle will not enter the cap freely, split the splice into two caps joined by a short length of wire rather than jamming a fifth conductor into a CE2.

Q: Do the caps have a shelf life?

A: The plastic shell and aluminium insert do not degrade under normal indoor storage. Keep them in the bag away from direct sun and solvent fumes, and they will remain usable for years. The failure mode is mechanical, a crushed or cracked shell, so inspect before crimping rather than assuming.

Good caps, order a size up if you are unsure

I started with CE1 for lamp cord and found it tight for three conductors, so I moved to CE2 and it fits cleanly. Nothing has come loose in six months of use on household lighting. The pack of 500 is more than I will use this year but the price made sense.

Faster than soldering and no burnt insulation

Twist, insert, crimp, done, and I am not standing over a heat gun in a cold garage. The plastic shell is thick enough that it does not split at the crimp line. I keep a handful in the door pocket of the van for emergency lighting repairs.

The 1000 piece box paid for itself in a week

I rewired a trailer harness and a set of auxiliary lights with these and every joint has held through a wet winter. The aluminium insert bites properly when you crimp with linesman pliers. CE2 covers most of the two and three wire splices I run into on older vehicles.
