Four Computers. One Stack. Zero Noise. A single Raspberry Pi 5 is a capable little machine. Four of them bolted together is a laboratory. The moment you stop running one board and start running a cluster, the problem stops being compute and starts being mechanics: four boards, four heatsinks, four sets of standoffs, four power leads and a tangle of ribbon cable that has to stay cool while looking like it was designed on purpose. The Pi Bastion is the answer to that problem in acrylic. It is a four-layer stack that turns a pile of single-board computers into one coherent, serviceable unit.

The kit pairs a transparent acrylic frame with four Armor Lite V5 heatsink assemblies, one for each board in the stack. That is the part most cluster builds get wrong. A Pi 5 under sustained load will throttle without serious cooling, and stacking four boards vertically compounds the problem because the heat from layer one rises straight into layer two. Armor Lite V5 solves it at the source: an aluminium body bonded to the SoC with a copper interface, sitting low enough to fit inside the acrylic layers while still shedding enough heat to keep a busy board at full clock. Copper standoffs hold the whole assembly rigid and provide the structural separation between layers.

Assembly is deliberately mechanical rather than clever. The layers bolt together with the supplied standoffs, each board sits on its own tier, and the open acrylic frame leaves every port, every GPIO header and every cooling surface accessible without dismantling the stack. That matters in a real cluster, because the machine you need to reach is always the second one from the bottom. Two colourways are offered, transparent and brown, so the finished stack either disappears into a dark rack or reads as a deliberate piece of hardware. Either way, what you end up with looks like infrastructure rather than a project.

A cluster is not four computers. It is one system that happens to be built from four.

Application Scenarios

This case is for anyone who has decided that one board is not the point. Homelab builders use the four-layer stack for a small Kubernetes or Docker Swarm testbed where the separate boards mirror separate nodes. Developers running CI runners, build agents or parallel test harnesses value the thermal headroom because a throttled node produces silently wrong benchmark numbers. Network engineers stack four Pis as a lab for routing, DNS and firewall exercises that would be expensive to reproduce on real hardware. Educational and research setups use it where a compact, visibly organised cluster is easier to supervise than four loose boards on a bench. In every case the stack is the same: multiple boards, one footprint, no thermal surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this kit include the Raspberry Pi 5 boards themselves?

A: No. The kit supplies the four-layer acrylic case, four Armor Lite V5 heatsink assemblies and the copper standoffs. The Raspberry Pi 5 boards are purchased separately.

Q: Why does each layer need its own heatsink rather than one shared fan?

A: Heat rises. In a vertical stack the upper layers sit in the exhaust of the layers below them. Giving each board its own bonded heatsink removes that heat at the source instead of trying to move it after it has already entered the stack.

Q: Will the Armor Lite V5 heatsink fit under the acrylic layers?

A: Yes. The Armor Lite V5 is a low-profile design intended for exactly this kind of stack, so the assembly closes cleanly without the heatsink contacting or stressing the frame.

Q: Are the ports and GPIO headers still accessible once assembled?

A: Yes. The frame is open on the port side and around the GPIO area, so you can reach connectors and headers without taking the stack apart.

Q: Do I need to solder anything during assembly?

A: No. Assembly is entirely mechanical and uses the supplied copper standoffs and fixings.

Q: Which colour should I choose?

A: Transparent shows the boards and heatsinks and reads as a technical piece. Brown is more subdued and blends into dark cabinetry or a rack. Both are the same acrylic thickness and structure.

Q: Is it suitable for a production cluster or only for testing?

A: It is well suited to homelab, development, CI and educational clusters. For a production environment with sustained maximum load, you may still want to add active airflow to the room or rack, but the Armor Lite V5 keeps each board within its operating range.

Exactly what a cluster build needs

The separate heatsink per layer is the right design. My CI runners stopped producing inconsistent benchmark numbers once the throttling went away. Assembly is mechanical and quick.

Great case, boards not included

Build quality and cooling are excellent, and the copper standoffs hold everything rigid. Just be clear that this is the case and heatsinks only, so budget for four boards on top of it.

The stack looks like infrastructure now

Went with the transparent version and it reads as a real piece of kit rather than a bench project. Ports and GPIO headers are still reachable without pulling the stack apart, which was my main worry.

Four nodes, no throttling

Stacked four Pi 5 boards for a homelab swarm and the Armor Lite V5 heatsinks keep every layer at full clock under sustained load. I expected the upper tiers to cook and they simply do not.
