Every mountain bike is an argument about the frame. Everything bolted to it is a detail. Geometry decides how the bike behaves when the trail stops being predictable, and material decides what the rider feels while it happens. Builders and riders who understand that spend their money on the chassis first and the components second.

The FR-701 is a full carbon fibre hardtail frame drawn around 29-inch wheels with plus-tyre clearance, using Toray carbon in a UD matte finish. The numbers are the ones that matter at the trailhead: 1250 grams give or take 50 in the 17-inch size, a 148mm rear width on the boost standard, BB92 bottom bracket shell, and a 31.6mm seatpost with a 37mm clamp. The head tube is 1.5 inch reduced to a 1-1/8 inch tapered steerer, integrated, which is what allows a modern fork to be fitted without adapters.

Clearance for 29 by 3.25 inch tyres is not a marketing figure. It changes where the bike can be ridden: higher volume means lower pressure, lower pressure means grip on loose rock and traction in sand, and both mean less fatigue in the hands and shoulders over a long descent. The band-mount front derailleur fitting keeps a two-by drivetrain possible for riders who want range rather than a single ring.

Three sizes, 17, 19 and 21 inch, cover most adult riders, and the frame arrives as a frame: no fork, no wheels, no shortcuts. It is the starting point of a build, which is exactly what it should be.

The frame is the part of the bike that remembers the ride.

Frame engineering notes

✦ Toray carbon construction. A recognised carbon supplier and a UD matte finish, which is the material story most riders actually want at this price point.

✦ 29er with plus clearance. Room for 29 by 3.25 inch tyres, giving grip and comfort that a narrow-tyre frame cannot offer.

✦ Boost 148mm rear spacing. The current standard for MTB hubs, which widens the aftermarket rather than narrowing it.

✦ 1250g frame weight. Competitive for a plus-tyre hardtail, and low enough that the build does not start compromised.

✦ Modern head tube. 1.5 inch reduced to 1-1/8 inch tapered, integrated, so current forks fit without adapters or shims.

✦ BB92 and 31.6mm seatpost. Standard interfaces that keep component choice open and servicing simple.

✦ Three frame sizes. 17, 19 and 21 inch options let a rider fit the frame to their body rather than fit their body to the frame.

Who builds on it

The home builder replacing a tired alloy frame is the main buyer, usually with a groupset and wheels already chosen and a frame as the last decision. Shops and small builders use it for customer builds where the frame has to be predictable across three sizes. Bikepacking riders choose the plus-tyre clearance deliberately, because a 29 by 3.0 tyre at low pressure turns a rigid hardtail into something that can be ridden for days. Riders who expect a full suspension feel from a hardtail will be disappointed by physics rather than by this frame. Anyone buying should budget for the fork, headset, bottom bracket and seatpost clamp, none of which are included.

Build questions

Q. Is this a complete bike?

No. It is a frame only. Fork, wheels, groupset, brakes, headset, bottom bracket and seatpost are separate purchases, which is the point of a frame-led build.

Q. What is the maximum tyre size?

Clearance is designed around 29 by 3.25 inch. Practical fitment depends on the tyre model and rim width, and 3.0 inch is the safer choice on narrower rims.

Q. Which bottom bracket do I need?

A BB92 press-fit unit. Choose a crankset with a 24mm or 30mm spindle and match the bottom bracket to the spindle, not the other way around.

Q. Is the frame compatible with a front derailleur?

Yes. The derailleur mount is a band type, so a two-by drivetrain is possible as well as a single ring setup.

Q. How should carbon be treated in use?

Use a torque wrench on every clamp, never overtighten a seatpost or stem, inspect after hard impacts, and avoid clamping carbon tubes in a work stand without protection.

Q. Which size fits me?

17 inch suits riders around 165 to 175 cm, 19 inch around 175 to 185 cm, and 21 inch above that. Reach and riding style move the boundary, so compare the effective top tube against a bike you already ride.

Sourcing and inspection. Frames are inspected for alignment, bottom bracket facing and head tube condition before dispatch, and any paint or finish issue is photographed and disclosed rather than discovered at assembly. Because a build is only as good as its worst interface, we confirm the fork steerer and bottom bracket standard against your planned components before the frame ships.

Good frame, budget for the extras

Frame only means frame only. Fork, headset, BB92 and clamp all add up, so plan the total build cost before you commit.

Built it up as a plus-tyre hardtail

Running 29x3.0 at 12 psi. The clearance is real and the frame does not feel vague in loose rock. Band mount front derailleur fitting meant I could keep a two-by setup.

Frame weight was honest

Weighed the 19 inch at 1264g on my scale, which is within the stated tolerance. Rear triangle is stiff and the head tube took my tapered fork without adapters.
