説明

The Victorians understood that a coat is not outerwear. It is a position. The Brasswright is built on that premise: a single-breasted tailcoat silhouette with a swept front, drawn long enough to change how you stand and structured enough to keep the line whether you are moving or still.

The cut is deceptively technical. A high-stretch knit polyester body holds the shoulder line without padding, the front closes in one clean diagonal, and the tails fall from a natural waist rather than a cinched one. That last detail is what separates a costume from a garment: there is no boning, no corset, no obligation to hold your breath.

Four finishes, each with a different argument. Black is the default, the one that works with everything already in the wardrobe. Deep blue reads as naval or academic depending on what you put with it. Green moves toward the botanical and the alchemical. Red is the one people remember. All four share the same construction, so the decision is entirely about which character you are dressing for.

A coat that changes your posture before it changes anyone else opinion.

Why It Works

  • ✦Single-breasted tailcoat cut with a swept front and natural waistline.
  • ✦High-stretch knit polyester holds the shoulder line without internal padding.
  • ✦Knee-length tails that fall cleanly and recover after sitting.
  • ✦Regular fit with an H profile, cut for movement rather than display.
  • ✦Four colourways: black, blue, green and red.
  • ✦Works as a costume layer or as a standalone statement coat.

Where It Belongs

This is the piece for the steampunk fair, the cosplay competition and the themed wedding where the dress code is doing actual work. It also functions as an evening coat over a plain black outfit, which is how most owners end up wearing it after the event season ends. Photographers favour it because the diagonal closure and the tail sweep give a still image two competing lines, and the knit means it drapes rather than stands away from the body.

Questions, Answered

Q: Is it a jacket or a dress?

It is cut as a long tailcoat that can be worn as either. Over trousers it is outerwear. Worn closed with a belt it reads as a dress coat. The construction supports both.

Q: Will the tails crease badly?

The knit has high recovery. Tails may hold a soft fold after long sitting but smooth out on the hanger within a few hours without ironing.

Q: How does the sizing run?

Regular fit with an H profile. If you are between sizes and want the coat to close cleanly, take the larger. If you plan to wear it open over layers, take your usual size.

Q: Can it be worn by men?

The cut is drafted on a women is pattern with a regular H profile. Many buyers wear it unisex, so check the size chart against your own shoulder and chest measurements rather than the label.

Q: What is the fabric weight like?

Mid-weight knit, opaque, with enough body to hold the closure line and enough stretch to move without strain.

Q: Is it warm?

It layers like a light coat. It is not insulated, so in cold weather it works as a mid-layer under wool or as a statement piece indoors at events.

Q: How does it compare with a tailored wool coat?

A wool coat is a winter garment built for warmth and structure. This is a lighter knit tailcoat built for silhouette and movement, so it layers rather than insulates. The two serve different purposes and most owners keep both.

Q: Can the tails be shortened?

Yes. The hem is a simple turn and can be taken up by any tailor without affecting the front closure. Shortening past the knee changes the proportion, so take no more than five centimetres.

Q: Does it work for a steampunk group costume?

It is the piece most group costumes build around, because the four colourways let several people match without looking identical. Goggles, a waistcoat and a cravat all sit comfortably under the front closure.

Q: How do I store it between events?

Hang it on a broad wooden hanger so the shoulder line holds, and let the tails fall free rather than folding them over the bar. The knit releases fold marks on its own within a few hours.

Survived a full convention weekend

Three days of wear, folded into a bag between events, and it came out of the suitcase without a crease. The stretch means it never felt restrictive sitting through panels.

Good, size up if you want it closed

I am between sizes and took my usual, which means it sits open over a waistcoat rather than closing. If you want it buttoned, take the larger. Otherwise the fit through the shoulder is excellent.

Four colours was the deciding factor

Three of us ordered together for a steampunk fair and we each took a different colour. Same construction, completely different character. The red is the one that gets photographed.

It changed how I stand

I expected a costume coat and got something I wear over a black outfit to dinner. The single breasted front closes cleanly and the tails fall straight instead of flaring out. The knit has real weight to it.
