説明

Every failed print has an origin story, and it is rarely the model. It is moisture, or diameter drift, or a spool wound with enough tension variance that the extruder spends the print fighting the filament instead of laying it down. Material is the least glamorous variable in 3D printing and the one that decides whether a fourteen hour job ends as a part or as a bin of spaghetti.

The Filament Foundry is a ten kilogram single-box supply built around that reality. Inside are individually sealed one kilogram spools of PLA, PETG, Silk PLA, TPU or ABS, all drawn at 1.75 millimetres with a tolerance of plus or minus 0.03 millimetres across the run, which is the number that matters when your nozzle is 0.4 millimetres wide. Silk PLA is specified at roughly fifty times the toughness of standard market PLA with low shrinkage and a finish that reads as polished metal rather than plastic. PETG brings chemical resistance, ABS brings heat tolerance, TPU brings flex, and keeping the whole family in one box means a material change is a decision rather than a purchase order.

Print temperatures are published rather than discovered by trial: silk PLA runs 200 to 230 degrees Celsius with a bed at 40 to 60, standard PLA prints 30 to 60 millimetres per second, and shelf life is stated at two years from a sealed spool. Two kilograms per spool, 343 metres of usable length, and a gross shipping weight of 1.4 kilograms per unit. What a printer actually needs is not more colours. It is one material that behaves exactly the same way on the hundredth spool as it did on the first.

A printer is only as good as the material you feed it, and consistency is the only feature that compounds.

Where It Works

Design studios keep the box so a single order covers prototyping, jig making and client samples without three separate purchase orders. Schools and makerspaces value it because sealed spools survive a term in a cupboard and the published temperature windows mean a student can load a spool without a supervisor. Print farms use it for the material discipline: diameter held to plus or minus 0.03 millimetres across ten kilograms is what stops a print failing at hour nine of a fourteen hour job. Cosplay and prop makers reach for the silk PLA specifically, because the finish reads as brushed metal straight off the bed with no post-processing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are included in the ten kilogram box?

The box carries individually sealed one kilogram spools drawn from the PLA, Silk PLA, PETG, TPU and ABS families, in the material and colour combination shown on the option you select. Every spool is sealed and labelled, so a mixed box stays organised.

Is the diameter tolerance really plus or minus 0.03 mm?

Yes, and that figure is the one that matters most. At 1.75 millimetres nominal against a 0.4 millimetre nozzle, diameter drift shows up as inconsistent extrusion within a single layer. Holding plus or minus 0.03 across the run keeps flow predictable from the first spool to the tenth.

Does silk PLA print like normal PLA?

It prints in a similar window, 200 to 230 degrees Celsius with a bed at 40 to 60, at 30 to 60 millimetres per second. What differs is the finish and the toughness, which is specified at roughly fifty times standard market PLA with lower shrinkage.

How should the spools be stored?

Sealed until use, then dry. Shelf life is two years from a sealed spool; once opened, PETG and TPU in particular pick up atmospheric moisture, so a dry box or a sealed bag with desiccant between jobs is the practical answer.

Will it fit my printer?

It is standard 1.75 millimetre feedstock with a one kilogram spool, so it fits any common FDM machine. If your printer uses a spool holder with a narrow arbor, check the hub diameter before ordering a full ten kilogram box.

Can I order a single material in bulk?

Yes. All ten kilograms can be one material and one colour where the option allows, which is what print farms and schools usually need. Mixed boxes are available for studios that change materials per project.

School term sorted in one order

One order covered a whole term of student projects across PLA and PETG. Sealed spools survived the holidays in a cupboard, and the published temperature windows mean students load material without me supervising every time.

Great value, storage matters

Excellent for a makerspace because the spools are individually sealed and labelled. Only note is that you need somewhere dry to keep the open ones - our PETG picked up moisture in a humid workshop until we added a dry box. Print temperatures on the box were accurate.

Ten kilos and no bad spools

Halfway through the box and every spool has printed the same. Diameter is consistent enough that I stopped re-checking flow after the first two. The silk PLA finish is the standout - props come off the bed looking brushed, no sanding.
