A print is finished long before it leaves the plate. What ruins it afterwards is light, because every glossy filament turns each layer into a highlight, and a hundred highlights read as visible layer lines from any angle. PLA Matte removes that reflection at the source. The surface stays flat and light-absorbing, so the geometry of the part is what the eye sees, not the staircase of the extrusion.
That finish only holds if the filament feeds consistently. SUNLU winds this spool at a fixed tension with no crossed loops, so the pull stays even from the first metre to the last, and the dimensional tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.02 mm across the 1.75 mm diameter. In practice that means no mid-print diameter drift, no sudden under-extrusion band at hour six, and a first layer that behaves the same on the tenth print as it did on the first. Low shrinkage and near-zero warping keep long flat parts on the bed without a raft.
It prints odourless on a standard FDM machine and suits the full range of common hotends and direct-drive extruders, so a spool does not commit you to one printer. The 1 kg spool gives roughly 330 metres of 1.75 mm filament, enough for a batch of display models or a single large structural piece, and the matte surface takes primer and acrylic without the keying problems that satin PLA creates.
Layer lines are inevitable. Making them reflect light is a choice, and this is the spool that declines it.
Why the finish is the specification
- ✦ Matte finish that absorbs light instead of reflecting it, so layer lines stay invisible in photographs and on a desk.
- ✦ Dimensional accuracy held to plus or minus 0.02 mm on a 1.75 mm diameter, checked across the spool rather than at one point.
- ✦ 100 percent neatly wound, fixed-tension spooling with no crossed loops, which is what prevents mid-print snags.
- ✦ Low shrinkage and near-zero warping: long flat parts hold the bed without a brim or raft.
- ✦ Odourless during printing, suitable for a workshop, an office or a classroom where an enclosed printer is not an option.
- ✦ Works with the common FDM range, so one spool is not locked to a single machine or hotend.
- ✦ Matte surface takes primer, acrylic and filler without the keying problems of satin PLA.

What this spool is for
This is the spool for work that gets photographed: display models, architectural massing, product prototypes, prop pieces, tabletop terrain that will be seen at close range on a shelf. It is equally the right choice for functional parts where the surface should not look printed at all, such as bracket covers, jigs and enclosures that sit in a workshop. Because it prints without odour, it is also the sensible default for a classroom or a shared office where an enclosed printer is not available.
Practical questions before you print
Q: Does matte PLA print differently from standard PLA?
It runs marginally hotter and slower. Start at 210 C nozzle and 55 C bed with the part cooling fan at full after the first three layers. If you see weak layer adhesion, drop to 40 mm/s before raising temperature further.
Q: Will the matte finish hide layer lines completely?
It removes the specular highlight that makes layer lines visible, which is most of the effect. Faint stepping can still be caught in raking light. Lower layer height and a 0.4 mm nozzle give the cleanest result.
Q: Is it brittle?
It behaves like standard PLA: rigid and dimensionally stable, not impact resistant. For parts that flex or take a knock, use PETG or ABS. For display and light-load functional parts, the rigidity is an advantage.
Q: How should the spool be stored between prints?
Sealed with the supplied desiccant, away from sunlight. PLA absorbs moisture slowly, but a spool left open for months will string and pop. If it does, dry it at 45 C for four to six hours before printing.
Q: Does it need an enclosure?
No. Low shrinkage means it prints on an open machine without draughts causing warping. An enclosure helps in a cold workshop but is not required.
Q: How much can one spool produce?
Roughly 330 metres, which is about 350 average-sized display models or one large structural print. The slicer estimate in grams is the reliable guide, since 1 kg of PLA is close to 1 kg of printed part plus supports.
