説明

A seam is the only part of a dress that cannot lie.

Most mini dresses are held together by elastic and hope. This one is held together by four seams. A seamed waist sits high on the ribcage rather than at the hip, two princess lines run from that waist down through the flare, and a concealed zip closes the back from neck to waist in a single clean line. The result is a dress that keeps its shape when you sit down, stand up, and sit down again on a bar stool with a low back.

The fabric is a fine-gauge knit in polyester with a slight two-way stretch, which is the difference between a dress that skims the body and a dress that grips it. It has enough weight to fall straight from the seam without pooling at the hem, and enough recovery to return to its line after an evening of movement. Espresso is a deep brown that behaves like a neutral: it holds its own next to black, softens against camel, and does not compete with cream accessories.

Length is the part most labels get wrong. Here it is graded, not guessed: measured flat from the shoulder, the dress runs 90 cm at S through 94 cm at M, 100 cm at L, 106 cm at XL and 112 cm at XXL. On most frames between 160 and 172 cm that lands at mid-thigh, above the knee and clear of the widest part of the leg. The A-line flare begins at the seam rather than at the waistband, so the solid colour reads as a single unbroken shape.

Structure is not stiffness. It is the difference between a dress that holds its line and one that follows yours.

The Architecture

Four decisions that decide how the dress behaves after the first hour.

  • ✦ Seamed waist set high on the ribcage, not at the natural hip line
  • ✦ Two princess seams carry the flare from waist to hem without bulk
  • ✦ Concealed centre-back zip closes from neckline to waist in one line
  • ✦ Fine-gauge polyester knit with slight two-way stretch and good recovery
  • ✦ Crew neckline cut close enough to stay flat when you lean forward
  • ✦ Sleeveless armhole finished narrow, so it layers under a jacket cleanly
  • ✦ Mini length graded per size rather than scaled from a single block

Measurements, Flat

Length from shoulder seam to hem: S 90 cm, M 94 cm, L 100 cm, XL 106 cm, XXL 112 cm. The knit carries roughly three centimetres of stretch through the body. Because the waist seam sits high, the measurement that decides the size is the ribcage circumference rather than the hip; if you are between sizes and prefer a fitted line, take the smaller size, and if you want the flare to read as a swing shape, take the larger.

Allow one to two centimetres of tolerance for hand-measured garments. The dress is unlined but the knit is dense enough to be opaque in espresso; it does not require a slip.

Where It Goes

This is the dress that solves the six o'clock problem. It is short enough for a summer evening and structured enough to wear to an office where sleeveless is acceptable under a cardigan. Worn with flat sandals it reads as weekend; with a heel and a cropped jacket it reads as dinner; with tights and a fine turtleneck underneath it carries into October. Pack it flat in a carry-on, hang it in a bathroom while you shower, and it reports for the evening without a steamer.

Common Questions

Q: Is the dress lined?

It is unlined. The knit is dense enough to stay opaque in the espresso colourway, so a slip is not required, though a nude-toned one is the safest choice under bright light.

Q: Will the waist seam sit at my natural waist?

It sits higher, on the lower ribcage, which is the point of the cut. On a 165 cm frame the seam lands roughly 38 cm below the shoulder, so it lengthens the leg line rather than cutting across the hips.

Q: How short is it really?

At S the dress measures 90 cm from the shoulder. On a 170 cm frame that is mid-thigh, clear of the knee. Taller wearers should size up if they want more length rather than more room.

Q: Does the fabric cling?

No. The knit has slight stretch and moderate weight, so it follows the body without gripping it. Static is minimal in dry indoor air, and a light anti-static spray handles the rest.

Q: Can I wear it to work?

Yes, with a layer. The high neckline and the sleeveless armhole finished close to the shoulder are designed to sit under a cardigan or a cropped blazer without bunching at the armhole.

Q: How should I wash it?

Cold machine wash inside out on a delicate cycle, then hang to dry. The zip should be closed. Do not tumble dry, because heat removes the recovery from the knit and the flare will soften permanently.

Finally a mini that does not ride up

I had given up on mini dresses because they climb. This one does not, because the flare starts at the seam rather than at the hem. The crew neckline stays flat when I lean over a table, and it tucks under a cropped jacket without bunching at the armhole.

Size up if you are tall

Beautifully made for the price and the knit is heavier than it looks. I am 175 cm and the S was shorter than I wanted, so I swapped for the M and the extra length fixed it. The back zip runs smoothly and does not catch at the waist seam.

Holds its shape all evening

The waist seam sits higher than I expected, right on the ribcage, and that is the whole reason it works. I wore it to a birthday dinner, sat and stood about a hundred times, and the flare was still crisp at midnight. The espresso reads closer to black in low light, which I liked.
