説明

The first layer is the part of a print that decides whether the rest of it exists. Every failed print in a workshop begins the same way: the nozzle lays a line of filament onto a bed that does not want it, and the part detaches nine hours later with the filament already spent. The bed surface is the cheapest fix in the whole machine and the one most often left alone.

This is a spring steel PEI plate for the Artillery Sidewinder SW-X1, SW-X2, Genius and Genius Pro. The construction is three layers doing three jobs: the flexible steel core that springs flat, the PEI sheet that grips hot plastic, and the base that seats on the heated bed. The point of spring steel is release. Bend the plate and the part pops off, which means no scraper against the surface, no chisel, no gouged PEI and no waiting for the bed to cool to 40 degrees.

PEI is the reason the grip works across materials. Heated to 60 degrees it holds PLA firmly enough to survive a fast first layer; at 80 to 90 degrees it holds PETG and ABS; below 40 degrees the same surface releases the part almost by itself. That behaviour comes from the sheet, not from glue stick or tape, which is the difference between a bed preparation routine that takes a minute and one that becomes a superstition.

Fitting is a two-minute job: remove the old build plate or clip, locate the spring steel on the bed, and check the Z offset. The offset is the part worth being patient about, because a PEI sheet is thinner than glass and the nozzle has to come down accordingly. Set it once with a first-layer test, and the plate becomes the part of the printer that never needs thinking about again.

A printer does not fail on layer forty. It fails on the first one, and then keeps going for nine hours.

Key Features

  • Spring steel core Flexes flat and springs back, so parts release by bending the plate instead of scraping it.
  • PEI build surface Grips PLA at 60 degrees, PETG and ABS at higher bed temperatures, and releases below 40 degrees.
  • Drop-in fit Cut for the Sidewinder SW-X1, SW-X2, Genius and Genius Pro heated beds, with no adapter frame.
  • No adhesives needed No glue stick, no blue tape, no hairspray routine once the Z offset is set correctly.
  • Scraper-free release Bending the plate is the whole removal method, which is what keeps the surface from being gouged.
  • Reversible design A smooth face for a glossy first layer and a textured face where grip and a matte finish matter.
  • Thin and thermally responsive Heats and cools faster than glass, so the bed is ready sooner and releases sooner.
  • Long service surface PEI wears slowly under correct Z offset; when it does, only the sheet is replaced, not the bed.

Technical Specifications

Where It Belongs

This is the plate for the X1 or Genius owner who has spent too many hours re-levelling and scraping. It suits small batch production where parts have to come off the bed quickly between jobs, and it suits the school or makerspace machine where a gouged glass bed is a constant risk. It is also the sensible upgrade for anyone still printing PETG onto bare glass with a glue stick, because the PEI surface does that job without the ritual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will it fit my printer?

A: It is cut for the Sidewinder SW-X1, SW-X2, Genius and Genius Pro. Check your model before ordering; other Artillery machines use a different bed size.

Q: Do I need clips?

A: The plate seats on the heated bed as supplied. If your machine uses clips or a magnetic base, keep whatever the original plate used, since this replaces the build surface rather than the bed.

Q: Why does my first layer look too close?

A: A PEI sheet is thinner than glass, so the offset has to come down. Lower the nozzle in small steps until the first layer is smooth and slightly squashed, then leave it alone.

Q: Can I print PETG on it?

A: Yes, at 80 to 90 degrees bed temperature. Let the plate cool below 40 before removing the part, or the PEI can tear as the part releases.

Q: How do I clean it?

A: Warm water and a drop of dish soap for grease, isopropyl alcohol between prints. Do not use acetone, which attacks the coating.

Q: How long does the surface last?

A: With a correct offset and a brass nozzle, months of regular printing. Hardened or abrasive filaments wear PEI faster, so expect to replace the sheet rather than the whole assembly.

Q: Does it warp?

A: No, that is the property of spring steel. It may arrive slightly bowed and will sit flat once fitted and heated.

Remember to drop the Z offset

First print was too close because the sheet is thinner than the glass bed. Lowered the nozzle in small steps and it has been perfect since. My own error, not the plate's.

PETG without glue stick

I had been using glue stick on glass for PETG for two years. This surface holds it at 85 and releases below 40 with no adhesive and no torn surface. Cleaning with dish soap and IPA between prints.

No more scraping glass

Genius Pro owner here. Parts release by bending the plate, so no scraper and no gouged surface. PLA at 60 grips firmly and releases the moment it cools. Should have bought this a year ago.
