Description

There are two ways to drill a hole. One produces a hole roughly where you aimed. The other produces a hole exactly where you specified, and the distance between those two outcomes is almost always the fixture, not the drill.

This compound vise turns a bench drill into a coordinate machine. The jaws clamp the workpiece and the cross-slide moves it under the bit on two axes, 80mm of X travel and 67mm of Y travel, with a graduated knob that advances 1.5mm per full turn. You set a position, cut, then step to the next hole without unclamping anything, which is what makes a run of six holes actually repeatable instead of merely similar.

The body is aluminium alloy, which keeps the unit light enough to lift on and off a drill table without a second pair of hands, and stiff enough for the light milling and slotting that a bench machine can realistically perform. The base rotates through 90 degrees for angled work, and the jaws open to 77mm, covering everything from small brackets and bushings to plate stock.

Everything about the design defers to the machine it sits on. It fixes to a bench drill table, aligns to the column, and gives you a scale to read instead of a mark to chase. For a workshop where one drill press does the work of three machines, that is the difference between a job and a job that has to be redone.

Aluminium is a deliberate choice. It will not rust in a cold garage, it will not gall the workpiece, and it will not fight you when you need to reposition it mid-cut.

A vise holds the work. A compound vise decides where the work goes.

Key Features

  • Two-axis compound movement. 80mm X-axis and 67mm Y-axis travel, so multiple holes are cut without releasing the workpiece.
  • Graduated feed knob. 1.5mm of travel per full turn for repeatable positioning between cuts.
  • 90-degree rotating base. Angle the jaws for slotted and angled features on the same setup.
  • 77mm maximum clamping. Wide enough for brackets, bushings, plate stock and small housings.
  • Aluminium alloy body. Light to move, corrosion resistant, non-marring on aluminium workpieces.
  • Bench drill mounting. Designed to fix to a standard drill press table as a semi-permanent fixture.
  • Milling and drilling in one. Handles light milling and slotting as well as straight drilling.

Where It Belongs

It earns its place in a garage workshop, a model engineering bench, or a small production cell where a drill press has to hold tolerance across a batch. Typical jobs are hole patterns in aluminium brackets, slotting small plate, drilling bushings at a fixed pitch, and any operation where a hand-held clamp would let the workpiece creep. It is equally useful for the hobbyist building chassis, mounts and jigs, and for the repair bench that occasionally has to reproduce a factory hole pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will it fit my bench drill?

A: It mounts to a standard drill press table and is intended for bench machines with enough throat depth for a 80mm X-axis slide. If you tell us your drill model we will confirm the fit before shipping.

Q: Why aluminium instead of cast iron?

A: Aluminium keeps the unit light enough to lift on and off the table, resists rust in an unheated workshop, and will not scratch aluminium workpieces. It is intended for drilling and light milling loads, not heavy stock removal.

Q: How accurate is the scale knob?

A: The knob advances 1.5mm per full turn, which gives a usable graduation for positioning. For work that needs tighter tolerance than the scale allows, use a dial indicator against the slide.

Q: Does it come with mounting bolts?

A: The package contains the compound vise unit itself. Mounting hardware depends on your drill table slot size, so we do not include a universal bolt kit.

Q: Can I use it for milling?

A: Light milling and slotting on a rigid bench machine, yes. Deep cuts on steel belong on a proper milling machine with a table that can take the load.

Q: How much backlash should I expect?

A: Cross-slide vises in this class have a small amount of backlash in the feed screws. Take up the slack in one direction before your final pass and the scale stays usable.

Buy bolts for your table

The vise itself is solid and the 77mm jaw opening covers most of what I do. It does not come with mounting hardware, so measure your drill table slots first. Slight learning curve on the rotation lock.

Aluminium was the right call

I work in a cold garage and the last vise I owned rusted at the base. This one wipes clean and does not mark aluminium workpieces. Backlash is small and takes up in one direction, exactly as expected at this price.

Drilled nine holes without moving the clamp

Set the first position, cut, then stepped the slide for the rest. Every hole lined up on the same pitch, which I have never managed with a hand clamp. The scale knob is easy to read once you get used to counting turns.
