Description

Storage furniture usually asks you to commit before you know what you own. You buy a cabinet with fixed shelves, then discover that the shelf spacing is wrong for the boxes you actually have, and the cabinet spends the next five years holding things it was not designed for.

A modular cube system inverts that. Each cube is a thirty-centimetre wire-grid cell that clips to its neighbours, so the unit you build is the unit your room needs. Six cubes stacked two by three in a hallway. Twelve cubes run along a bedroom wall. The same panels, reconfigured, follow you through three moves.

The frame is iron wire with a powder-coated finish, braced at every intersection. That bracing is what separates this from the flat-pack cubes that bow under a row of books. Assembly uses the plastic mallet included in the box; no screwdriver, no cam locks, no instruction manual you will lose halfway through. Disassembly is the same operation in reverse, which is what makes it genuinely portable rather than technically portable.

A shelf should be a decision you can undo.

Why It Earns Its Place

  • ✦ Thirty centimetre cube cells that clip together in any arrangement
  • ✦ Iron wire frame with braced intersections for load stability
  • ✦ Reconfigurable between vertical stack, wall run or stepped unit
  • ✦ No tools required, plastic assembly mallet included
  • ✦ Disassembles flat for moving and storage
  • ✦ Open grid design keeps contents visible and ventilated
  • ✦ Available in six-cube and twelve-cube configurations

Where It Belongs

This is a room-shaping piece for renters and for anyone who has ever moved a solid cabinet down a stairwell. In a bedroom it holds folded clothing and shoes under a hanging rail; in a study it becomes open shelving for books and equipment; in a pantry it stacks canned goods where you can see them. Because the cells are open on all six sides, it also works as a room divider without blocking light, which is why buyers in small apartments tend to order twelve cubes rather than six.

Questions Buyers Ask

Q: How much weight can each cube hold?

A: A single cell comfortably carries the contents of a shelf of books or a stack of folded clothing. Load is carried by the wire frame rather than the clips, so distribute weight across the unit rather than concentrating it in one top cube.

Q: Can I buy extra cubes later?

A: Yes. The panels are identical across configurations, so additional sets expand an existing unit rather than replacing it.

Q: Does it need to be fixed to the wall?

A: For six cubes on the floor, no. For a twelve-cube stack in a household with small children, we recommend a wall anchor at the top rear corner.

Q: Is the mallet really enough?

A: Yes. The joints are friction clips seated with a light tap. A hammer works too but will mark the coated finish.

Q: Will it scratch a wooden floor?

A: The wire feet are smooth-coated. On hardwood or laminate, felt pads under the base corners prevent movement marks.

Q: What is the assembled footprint of twelve cubes?

A: A three by four arrangement measures roughly 90 cm wide by 120 cm high, with 30 cm depth, which fits a standard alcove.

Q: Can it be used as a room divider?

A: Yes. The grid is open on all sides, so light passes through and the unit reads as a screen rather than a wall. Two six-cube units set at a right angle make a stable freestanding divider.

Q: Does the coating chip at the joints?

A: The powder coat is applied before the panels are bent, so the wear points at each clip are protected. Light scuffing at the feet is normal and does not affect the structure.

Good unit, anchor it if stacking tall

Assembly took me about twenty minutes alone. Twelve cubes stacked high moves slightly when pushed, so I anchored the top corner to the wall and it has been solid since.

Holds a full shelf of books

I was sceptical about wire cubes carrying weight, but the braced frame does not bow under a row of hardbacks. The mallet included in the box is genuinely all you need.

Reconfigured it three times already

Started as a two by three in the hallway, then moved it to the bedroom as a tall stack. The clips came apart and went back together without any loosening, which is more than I can say for the flat-pack unit it replaced.
