Description

Inventories of dark are short and predictable. A power cut on a winter evening, a tent zipped shut at dusk, a stairwell fuse box with no window and no light switch anyone can find. A lantern is a promise about those hours, and most of them break it the moment the cell runs flat at exactly the point when light matters most. This one carries its own 1200mAh lithium-ion cell, charges from any 5V/1A USB supply, and holds two to eight hours of runtime depending on where the knob is set.

The control is the part worth describing. There is no three-position switch and no sticker carrying the words low, medium and high. A single dimming knob moves the output anywhere between 10 and 200 lumens and leaves it there, so a campsite can be lit properly for cooking and then dropped to a glow that does not wake the tent next door. The COB bead spreads its light across a panel rather than concentrating it into the single hard hotspot that makes cheaper lanterns unpleasant to read or work under.

Around the light sits a body of ABS at 240 grams and 11 by 23.5 centimetres, built to shrug off rain and spray, with a folding hook sized for a tent loop, a low branch or the underside of a shelf. It is finished in deep black, army green or dark red and arrives with its USB lead. The limits are stated rather than implied: charge it from a 5V/1A adapter instead of a fast-charge brick, keep it clear of flammable material while charging, and treat it as splash-proof rather than submersible.

Dark is not defeated by brightness. It is negotiated, one turn of the knob at a time.

What Sets It Apart

  • ✦ Stepless dimming from 10 to 200 lumens on one rotating knob, with no fixed brightness steps
  • ✦ COB LED panel that spreads an even wash of warm white light instead of a single hotspot
  • ✦ 1200mAh rechargeable 18650 lithium-ion cell with USB charging from a 5V/1A adapter
  • ✦ Two to eight hours of runtime per charge, set by how far the knob is turned
  • ✦ 240 g ABS body measuring 11 x 23.5 cm, resistant to rain and water splash
  • ✦ Folding hook for hanging inside a tent, from a branch or under a shelf
  • ✦ One-year warranty, supplied with the USB charging cable

Where It Belongs

This lantern is bought by people who need light somewhere that lighting was never installed. Campers hang it from a tent loop for a card game and then dim it to a night light. Anglers, hunters and fishers keep one in a tackle bag or a truck bed, where the hook matters more than the lumen count. Households in storm corridors keep two charged through the season, because a cable outage turns a hallway into a hazard and a 200-lumen panel at the top of the stairs is the difference between a careful walk and a fall. Mechanics working in an unlit garage, drivers changing a wheel at the roadside after dark and anyone clearing a fuse box during an outage all want the same thing from this shape: a broad, adjustable light that hangs where the work is instead of occupying a hand. The warm white output is also the reason it can be left on in a room at night, which is not a small point when the alternative is a cold blue phone screen at two in the morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know when it is charging?

A: The power indicator turns red while the lantern is charging and green once the cell is full. The full charge takes two to four hours from a 5 V / 1 A supply.

Q: Can I use a fast-charge phone brick?

A: No. The lantern should be charged from a standard 5 V / 1 A adapter. Higher-current chargers can damage the cell, which is why the cable is supplied without a wall adapter.

Q: How bright is 200 lumens in practice?

A: Enough to cook, read and move around a campsite or a room of ordinary size from a hanging position. The knob then takes it down to roughly 10 lumens, a level that lights a tent interior without disturbing anyone trying to sleep.

Q: Is it genuinely waterproof?

A: It resists rain and water splash, which covers a wet campsite or a storm on a porch. It is not designed to be soaked, submerged or floated, so keep it out of standing water.

Q: What kind of battery is inside, and can it be replaced?

A: A 1200 mAh 18650 lithium-ion cell. The lantern is charged over USB rather than by opening the body, and the cell is not intended to be user-replaced.

Q: How long does it actually last on one charge?

A: Between two and eight hours, and the range is real rather than marketing: high output drains the cell in roughly two hours, while a dimmed setting runs through a full night and into the next day.

Great lantern, wish the charge lasted longer

Build quality is solid for the price and the hook is genuinely useful in a garage with no wiring. Two hours at full output is honest rather than generous, so charge it before a long night. On the low setting it runs most of the night.

Hangs anywhere and survived a wet weekend

Took it on a three day trip and it hung from the tent loop the whole time. Rain on the second night did not bother it at all. The COB panel gives an even light with no hotspot, which matters when you are reading.

Dimming knob is the whole point

Bought two for storm season and the knob is what makes them usable. Full brightness for the kitchen during an outage, then turned down to almost nothing as a night light in the hallway. Charges in about three hours from an old phone brick.
