Description

A television fixes the room around it. A projector lets the room decide. This is the HY300, a compact smart projector running Android 11 on an H713 chip with WiFi 6, mounted on a bracket that rotates through 180 degrees, so it throws onto a wall, a ceiling or the back of a van without a tripod, a shelf or a hole in the plaster. Plug it in, point it, and the wall becomes the screen.

The hardware choices are the ones that matter at this size. WiFi 6 keeps the stream stable when the router is in another room, which is where budget projectors normally fail: the picture is fine but the buffer stutters. The H713 chip decodes modern codecs without dropping frames, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage run the streaming apps natively rather than through a phone mirror, and the 100 to 240 V input means the same unit works in a UK socket and on a European trip with a plug adapter.

The 180 degree pivot is the feature that changes how it gets used. Point it at the ceiling for a bedroom, angle it down at a table for a garden cinema, or throw it sideways onto a blank wall in a room too narrow for a screen. The lens is fixed focus, so there is no autofocus hunting in the middle of a film, and setup is a power cable, a WiFi password and a sign in to the app you already pay for.

A screen is a piece of furniture. A wall is a surface you already own.

What you are actually buying

  • ✦ Android 11 with the H713 chip, running streaming apps natively without a phone.
  • ✦ WiFi 6 for stable streaming when the router is not in the same room.
  • ✦ 180 degree rotating bracket for wall, ceiling or floor projection without a tripod.
  • ✦ Compact body that packs into a bag for trips, garden evenings and dorm rooms.
  • ✦ 1 GB RAM and 8 GB storage for app installs and cached playback.
  • ✦ 100 to 240 V wide input with a UK plug, so it travels with an adapter only.
  • ✦ Fixed focus lens that does not hunt for focus mid film.

Where it belongs

The use case is the room you already have rather than a dedicated cinema. A bedroom ceiling projection replaces a wall mounted TV that would dominate the space. A garden or camping evening becomes a film night with a sheet and a power bank. A small flat gets a hundred inch image from a shelf instead of a fifty inch panel. It also suits a dorm, a workshop break room and a rental where nothing can be mounted on the wall.

Questions buyers actually ask

Q: Does it need a dark room?

It performs best with controlled light. In a living room with curtains closed the image is bright enough to watch comfortably; in full daylight it will look washed out. This is a projector for evenings and dark rooms, not for a sunny conservatory at noon.

Q: Can I connect a console or a laptop?

Yes, through the HDMI input. A console or a laptop feeds the projector directly and the built in speaker handles audio, with an output for external speakers if you want more weight. Streaming apps run on the projector itself, so you do not need a laptop for those.

Q: What size image can it throw?

Large enough for a wall in a normal room, and the limit is usually how far you can place it from the surface rather than the projector itself. In a small room, short throw distance gives a big image. Keep the unit roughly square to the wall, since focus is fixed.

Q: Does the 180 degree bracket hold its angle?

Yes, the pivot holds under its own weight, which is what makes ceiling projection practical. Set the angle before you switch on and check the image before pressing play. There is no motorised tilt, so the angle is set by hand.

Q: Is the fan loud during quiet scenes?

Audible in a silent room, masked as soon as there is dialogue or music. Small projectors move a lot of air through a small body. If you watch late at night at low volume, sit the projector behind the viewing position rather than beside your head.

Q: Does it work with a power bank?

It needs mains power, so a power bank only works if it can deliver mains level output through an inverter. For garden use, run an extension from an outdoor socket or use a small portable power station. It has no internal battery.

Good picture, needs a dark room

In a room with curtains closed the image is genuinely watchable and the colours hold. In daylight it washes out, which is normal for this class. For the money and the 180 degree bracket it does exactly what it promises.

Garden film nights sorted

Ran it off an outdoor socket onto a hung sheet for the children and it was bright enough once the light dropped. The fixed focus means no hunting mid film, and the body is small enough to pack in a bag with the cable.

Ceiling projection changed the bedroom

Pointed it at the ceiling and it holds the angle without a tripod. WiFi 6 kept the stream stable with the router two rooms away, which was the reason I avoided budget projectors before. Set up in five minutes with the apps already installed.
