Description

The scarf is the piece everyone loses. This coat builds it in. The collar is cut long and wide enough to wrap once around the neck, in the same knit as the body, so the layer that normally gets left on a restaurant chair is attached to the garment that was going to be worn anyway. The result is a coat that closes at the throat without a zip, a button or a fastening, which is why it looks relaxed where a belted coat looks buttoned up.

The body is a medium-weight knitted polyester. Polyester is not a luxury fibre, and pretending otherwise does nobody any favours, but it is the right one here: it holds a stripe, it resists creasing, it takes a colour deeply, and it does not need dry cleaning. Fabric weight sits in the 120 to 220 grams per square metre band, which is the range where a coat drapes instead of standing away from the body.

The silhouette is loose and straight, open-fronted, with full-length sleeves and a length that falls at the hip on a 165 cm frame and slightly above it on a taller one. Sizes S, M, L scale in length from 100 cm to 108 cm, so the proportion survives the size change. Prints run from fine pinstripe to wide block stripe to plain, which means the same pattern can be worn twice in a week without looking like a uniform.

It is the coat you throw over a t-shirt in October and over a turtleneck in December. Nothing about it needs care beyond a cold wash and a hanger, and that is precisely the point of a knitted outer layer: it earns its place by being the easiest thing to reach for.

A coat that carries its own scarf has already solved the morning.

Three things the cut solves

  • ✦ Integrated scarf collar that wraps the neck without a separate accessory
  • ✦ Medium-weight knit in the 120 to 220 gsm band for drape without stiffness
  • ✦ Open front, no closure, worn as a layering coat
  • ✦ Loose straight silhouette with full-length sleeves
  • ✦ Length scales from 100 cm at S to 108 cm at L
  • ✦ Stripe and plain prints across multiple colourways
  • ✦ Crease resistant polyester knit that needs no dry cleaning

When it earns its place

It belongs to the transitional months when a jacket is too much and a sweater is too little: the walk to the station, an unheated studio, a long lunch that ends outdoors. Because the collar does the work of a scarf, it also suits anyone who travels light and refuses to pack accessories. Wear it open over a dress, or with the collar wrapped and a belt over the top to change the line entirely.

Wear and care

Q: Does the collar stay wrapped or does it fall open?

It stays where you put it. The knit has enough body to hold a single wrap without a pin, though a brooch or a belt over the top will hold it more firmly.

Q: How warm is it really?

It is a knit coat, not a padded one. Comfortable down to about 12 degrees Celsius over a long sleeve, and best as a mid layer under a proper coat below that.

Q: Will the knit pill?

Any knit pills where it rubs, usually under the arm and across the bag strap. A fabric shaver restores it in two minutes. Washing inside out and drying flat slows it down.

Q: What length is it on a taller frame?

The hem sits at 100 to 108 cm from the shoulder depending on size. On a 175 cm frame that is mid-hip rather than hip, which keeps the proportion right for a taller wearer.

Q: Are the stripes a print or a weave?

A print on a knitted ground. That is what allows the variety of stripe widths across the colourways without changing the pattern or the price.

Loose fit, and the sleeves are long

Straight cut with no closure, so it hangs rather than shapes, which is what I wanted. Sleeves run long on me at 160 cm and I turn the cuff once. Cold wash and flat dry kept the length.

Warm for a knit coat

Fabric weight is genuinely medium rather than tissue thin, and it blocks wind better than a cardigan. Wore it over a turtleneck at about twelve degrees and was comfortable. Stripes are printed on a knitted ground, so no pulling at the seams.

The attached scarf is the reason

I lose scarves constantly, so a collar that wraps and stays put solved a real problem. The knit has enough body to hold a single wrap without a pin. I am 165 cm and the hem sits at the hip exactly as described.
