Description

A firewall that needs a fan is a firewall with a moving part that will eventually stop. The Six Gate removes that variable entirely: a passively cooled aluminium chassis, a Celeron 3855U or 3965U dual-core processor, and six Intel I211-AT Gigabit controllers arranged across the rear panel. No spinning bearing, no dust-clogged heatsink stack, nothing to service in a wiring closet that nobody visits.

Six ports is not decoration. It is the difference between a router with a LAN and a segmented network with a WAN, a DMZ, a management plane, a guest segment, a camera VLAN and a spare link that can be re-tasked without adding a switch. Each port runs on its own I211-AT controller, so ports do not contend for a single PHY, and AES-NI support in the platform keeps VPN throughput from collapsing under encryption load.

Provisioning is deliberately unopinionated. One DDR4 SO-DIMM slot accepts up to 16GB at 2133MHz, storage runs on mSATA, and the appliance will boot pfSense, OPNsense, Sophos, Untangle, CentOS, Windows or a plain Linux distribution. The 12-month warranty and the VESA bracket in the box tell you what kind of product this is meant to be: infrastructure, installed once and left running around the clock.

Silence, in networking hardware, is a reliability feature.

Typical Deployments

Small offices put it at the edge as a pfSense box with a dedicated guest segment. Factories use the six ports to keep machine networks away from office traffic without buying a managed switch. Branch sites deploy it as a site-to-site VPN endpoint that draws a few watts and never spins up a fan. Integrators keep one on the shelf as a drop-in replacement for consumer routers that cannot be segmented, and because it is x86 rather than a sealed vendor appliance, the software stays under the operator's control.

Operational Questions

Q: How many devices can six Gigabit ports realistically serve?

Port count is not the constraint, throughput is. Each I211-AT port runs at line rate, and the practical ceiling comes from the CPU once you enable NAT, deep packet inspection or VPN tunnels. For routing and firewalling without heavy inspection, this platform handles ordinary small-office loads comfortably.

Q: Does fanless mean it throttles?

The processor is a 15W-class Celeron, which is exactly the class that passive aluminium cooling can sustain. The chassis acts as the heatsink, so mount it with clearance rather than enclosing it in a sealed cabinet.

Q: Is AES-NI available for VPN use?

Yes. The platform supports AES-NI, which offloads AES encryption to the processor. That matters on hardware in this class, where software-only encryption would otherwise cap tunnel throughput.

Q: Which firewall distribution should I choose?

The hardware does not force a choice: pfSense, OPNsense, Sophos, Untangle and plain Linux distributions all boot on it. Select based on your support model and the features you actually operate, not on hardware compatibility.

Q: Can it be mounted on a wall or cabinet?

A VESA bracket is included in the packing list, so the unit can be fixed to a wall plate, cabinet panel or the back of a shelf rather than left loose on a rack shelf.

Q: Does it support VLAN segmentation across the six ports?

VLAN support comes from the software you install, not from the chassis. With pfSense, OPNsense or a Linux bridge configuration you can carry multiple tagged VLANs across any of the six interfaces, and because every port has its own controller, trunking one does not starve another.

Q: How much memory does an appliance of this class need?

For stateful firewalling and basic VPN tunnels, 4GB is workable and 8GB leaves comfortable headroom for logging, IDS packages and larger rule sets. The single slot accepts up to 16GB at 2133MHz if heavier packages will run alongside routing.

Right tool for a small site

Eight gigabytes is enough for firewalling and logging, but if you plan to run IDS packages, order the larger memory option. Not a complaint about the hardware, just plan the software load first.

Running pfSense on it from day one

Installed from USB without any driver fiddling. AES-NI is present and the VPN tunnel holds a steady throughput well above what my line delivers. The VESA bracket went straight onto the cabinet panel.

Six ports did what a switch could not

Segmented the office into WAN, staff, guest, cameras, management and a spare. Because each port has its own Intel controller, the camera stream does not compete with staff traffic. Fanless means I have stopped thinking about it, which is the goal.
