the-co-pilot-den-dog-car-seat-cover
The Co-Pilot Den | Waterproof Dog Hammock and Backseat Extender

The road is not a place for an animal to brace itself. It is a place for the animal to rest. Every car has a back seat, and almost none of them has anywhere a dog can actually lie down. The Co-Pilot Den turns that dead strip of bench and footwell into a stable floor, suspended between the front and rear seats in the shape of a shallow hammock. A dog that used to scramble for grip on every roundabout now has a surface that stays under it.

The build is quiet rather than clever. The outer shell is Oxford cloth rated at 55 per cent polyester, backed by poplar wood panels and a small proportion of PVC, which is what gives the platform its flatness under load. The footprint is 136.5 by 70.5 by 42 centimetres, wide enough to span a standard rear bench, and the structure is rated to bear up to 100 kilograms, or 220.46 pounds, without the centre dipping toward the floorboards. A full-grown retriever can settle on it without the material creeping.

Practicality is where the design earns its place. The whole assembly weighs 4 kilograms, so it lifts out in one hand and folds flat against the boot wall between trips. The surface takes a mechanical wash, which means mud, sand, road salt and wet fur are a laundry cycle rather than a permanent feature of the upholstery. The plaid finish in black and grey is deliberately plain, chosen to sit against any interior rather than to advertise itself.

It is not a mat. Some are commuters who take a dog to work and back and are tired of vacuuming hair out of the seat seams. Some are weekend travellers heading to trailheads and beaches, where a wet dog will otherwise soak through the upholstery before the drive home. Others have just bought a new car and want a barrier in place before the first scratch, not after it. In each case the appeal is the same: the dog stops sliding, the seats stop absorbing, and the journey stops being a negotiation between the animal and the driver.

Questions Drivers Ask

Q: Will this fit my car?

It fits a standard rear bench with a 136.5 x 70.5 cm platform, which covers the great majority of passenger cars, estates and SUVs.
