Description
The ornament box that comes out of the loft every December is a small archaeology of other people's taste. Glass baubles from a decade ago, half of them chipped, none of them meaning anything. A fillable bauble changes the exercise. It is an empty transparent sphere, and what goes inside is decided by whoever owns the tree.
The Glasshouse Bauble is a six-piece set of clear shatterproof spheres that open along a seam. Fill them with dried petals, ribbon offcuts, a printed photograph, tiny wooden figures, sand from a beach, or nothing at all. The plastic is transparent enough to read as glass from half a metre and tough enough to survive a toddler, a pet and a storage box stacked under other boxes.
That combination matters more than it sounds. Households with young children usually cannot hang glass at all, which is why so many trees end up with a uniform set of plastic spheres in one colour. A fillable shell restores the personal layer without reintroducing the breakage risk, and the seam holds closed under the weight of small contents.
The sets work as a family activity in the weeks before the holiday. Each person fills their own, the tree becomes a record of that year rather than a reproduction of a shop display, and the ornaments can be emptied and refilled next December when the contents have changed. That reusability is the entire design argument.
A decoration that holds something of yours will outlast every decoration that came from a shelf.

Where It Belongs
Families with small children use the set as the tree's safe zone, hanging fillable spheres at toddler height where glass would never survive. Craft sellers buy multiple sets because a personalised bauble filled with dried flowers or a name card sells at a premium in holiday markets. Event stylists use them as table scatter and place-card holders, filling each with a guest's name tag in a colour that matches the scheme.
Questions Buyers Ask
Q: Do they look like real glass?
A: From a normal viewing distance the clarity reads as glass. Up close the plastic is detectable by weight and warmth, not by appearance.
Q: How much can I put inside?
A: Light contents work best: dried petals, ribbon, small figures, paper. Heavy fills stress the seam and should be avoided.
Q: Can they be used outdoors?
A: Yes for covered porches. Direct rain exposure can let water in through the seam, so drain and dry before storage.
Q: Are they safe around toddlers?
A: Yes. The shell is shatterproof with no glass component, which is the main reason parents choose fillable plastic baubles.
Q: How do I open them?
A: The sphere separates along the seam with a gentle twist. No tools are required and there is no adhesive to cut.
Q: Can I paint or decorate the outside?
A: Acrylic paint and permanent marker adhere well. Keep solvent-based paints away from the seam edge.
