Description

The Tool That Cuts What Nothing Else Can Reach.

An oscillating multi-tool is the answer to a specific problem: a cut that has to happen in place, in a corner, flush to a surface, with the workpiece already installed. Undercutting a door frame for new flooring, trimming a skirting board around a pipe, slicing a mortise into a fitted jamb, cutting a nail buried in timber without destroying the blade. A circular saw cannot start in the middle of a board, a jigsaw cannot cut flush, and a chisel needs space to work. The multi-tool does it by moving a small blade sideways at high frequency instead of spinning it.

Frequency is what makes that work. This one runs from 10,000 to 20,000 oscillations per minute with a 4 degree swing, and the quick release lever means a blade change takes seconds rather than the two minutes a hex bolt takes when your hands are full. Maximum output is rated at 740 watts with anti-vibration isolation in the body, which is the difference between a tool that stays controllable through a long cut and one that leaves your hand buzzing after thirty seconds of plaster.

The battery platform is the Makita 18 volt system: BL1830, BL1840, BL1840B, BL1850 and BL1850B all fit, with a 2.0 to 5.0 amp hour capacity recommended. It is explicitly not compatible with the DC18WA, BL1813G or BL1413G packs, which is worth knowing before you order a bare tool for a battery you already own. Three configurations are stocked: one battery set, two battery sets, or tool only with no battery and no charger for people already on the platform.

Most tools need room to work. This one needs a millimetre and a decision.

  • Quick Release Blade Change — Lever release rather than a hex bolt
  • Anti-Vibration Isolation — Keeps the body controllable through long cuts
  • Flush and Plunge Cutting — Cuts in place, in corners, against a surface
  • Makita 18V Compatible — BL1830, BL1840, BL1840B, BL1850 and BL1850B packs

The Jobs It Gets Called For

A flooring installer undercuts door frames and architraves so new boards slide beneath them, which is impossible with any other tool in a fitted room. A plumber cuts a pipe access slot into a fitted cabinet back panel without removing the cabinet. A joiner trims skirting around a radiator bracket that was never going to come off cleanly. An electrician cuts plasterboard for a back box without a dust shower from an angle grinder. An automotive restorer slices seam sealer and trim clips that resist everything else. A renovator uses it with a scraper blade to lift vinyl and adhesive before a floor replacement, which is the least glamorous job it does and the one it saves the most time on.

Questions Worth Asking

Q: Which batteries fit?

A: Makita 18 volt packs: BL1830, BL1840, BL1840B, BL1850 and BL1850B. It does not fit DC18WA, BL1813G or BL1413G. Check the pack you own before ordering the bare tool version.

Q: Do I need to buy blades separately?

A: Blades are consumables and are not the point of the tool listing. Order the blade types the job needs: a bi-metal blade for nails and metal, a wood blade for clean timber cuts, a scraper for adhesive and a sanding pad for finishing.

Q: What does the 4 degree swing mean in practice?

A: The swing angle sets how aggressively the blade bites. Four degrees is the common working angle: enough to cut efficiently without stalling the motor in a tight plunge.

Q: Can it cut through a nail in timber?

A: That is what a bi-metal blade is for. A wood blade will lose teeth on a nail. Expect to go through blades on nail-heavy work, which is normal for the tool rather than a fault.

Q: Is it variable speed?

A: The tool runs across a 10,000 to 20,000 OPM range so speed can be matched to material. Drop the frequency for plastic and laminate, raise it for timber and plaster.

Q: Which configuration should I order?

A: Order the two battery set for site work where charging time matters, one battery set for occasional use, and the bare tool if you already own Makita 18V packs and a charger.

Not a metal cutter, but it copes

A bi-metal blade got through the nails in old framing, and it went through blades doing it. That is normal for this tool, not a fault, and worth knowing before you start.

Blade change in seconds

The quick release lever means swapping from wood to scraper between jobs without hunting for a hex key. Anti-vibration build keeps it controllable through plaster.

Battery compatibility is the catch

It runs on the Makita 18V packs listed and no others, so check yours before ordering the bare tool. With a 5.0 Ah pack it lasts a full afternoon of trim work.

Undercut four door frames

New flooring throughout the ground floor and every frame needed trimming in place. This did all four without taking a door off, which no other tool in my van could do.
