Description

The sewing machine is the tool. The presser foot is the technique. A blind hem, a rolled edge, an invisible zip and a pintuck all use the same needle, the same thread and the same motor. What changes is the piece of metal holding the fabric down, and that is why a drawer full of feet turns one machine into six. This collection runs from an eight-piece starter set to an eighty-two piece kit, and every set is built around the same logic: buy the geometry you do not yet own.

Steel construction matters here more than it does on most accessories. A foot that flexes under pressure drags the fabric and produces a seam that wanders no matter how carefully the operator guides it. These are stamped and finished in steel with a smooth sole, and the shank fits the standard low-shank and snap-on mounts that most domestic machines use. The pieces cover the work that actually appears on a project: cording, braiding, pintucks, rolled hems, adjustable zips, knit seams, edge stitching, open toe applique and quilting guides.

The larger sets arrive in a compartment box, which is the difference between a kit that gets used and a bag of loose metal that gets lost. For a beginner the eight-piece set covers the first year of garment work. For someone who already sews, the forty-five and eighty-two piece kits fill the gaps that appear when a pattern calls for a technique the machine did not ship with.

Most machines are capable of far more than their owners ask of them. The missing part is usually a two dollar piece of steel.

  • ✦ Zipper, knit and edge stitch feet for garment and stretch work

Where It Belongs

A beginner buying a first machine usually discovers within a month that the two feet in the box are not enough for the pattern they want to sew, and the eight or eleven piece set closes that gap. Dressmakers doing alterations need the blind hem and invisible zip feet as a matter of routine, because the finish is what a client notices. Quilters use the quilting guide and open toe feet for stitch-in-the-ditch work and applique. Small tailoring businesses buy the large kits because replacing one worn foot costs more in downtime than the set costs outright, and craft classes keep a boxed set per machine so a student is never waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will these fit my machine?

A: They fit standard low-shank and snap-on mounts, which covers the majority of domestic machines. Industrial machines and high-shank or slant-shank models use a different fitting and are not compatible.

Q: Which set should a beginner buy?

A: The eight or eleven piece plain set covers the first year of garment work. Choose a boxed set once you know you will keep sewing, because the box is what stops the feet being lost.

Q: Are the feet labelled so I know which is which?

A: The pieces are identifiable by shape rather than printed labels. The boxed sets are compartmented, and a printed reference sheet is included with the larger kits so each foot can be matched to its technique.

Q: Do I need a special needle or bobbin for these?

A: No. The feet change how the fabric is held, not how the stitch is formed. Use the needle and thread your fabric and machine already call for.

Q: What is the difference between the plain set and the boxed set at the same piece count?

A: The feet are identical. The boxed version adds the compartment case, which is why an eleven piece boxed set and a sixteen piece plain set cost roughly the same.

Q: Can these feet be used on stretch fabrics?

A: The knit foot and edge stitch foot are included specifically for stretch and jersey work, and the roller foot helps with leather and vinyl where a standard foot sticks.

Good starter kit

The 8 piece set covered everything my first year of garment sewing needed. A couple of the feet needed a light oil before they moved smoothly, otherwise no complaints at this price.

Boxed set keeps them findable

Upgraded to the 45 piece boxed set after losing feet in a drawer for years. Compartments are labelled by shape and the reference sheet matches them. The quilting guide has already paid for itself.

The blind hem foot alone was worth it

Bought the 16 piece set for alterations work. The blind hem and invisible zip feet are the two I reach for weekly, and the steel does not flex under the presser bar. Shank fit was correct on my low-shank machine.
