Description

A line of brass tacks along the edge of a chair is the oldest punctuation mark in furniture. It closes the seam between fabric and frame, hides the staples that hold the upholstery down, and gives an upholsterer a way to end a surface with a deliberate edge instead of a folded hem. Before trim strips existed, every one of those tacks was set by hand, one hammer strike at a time, which is why a hand-nailed chair costs what it costs.

This is the strip version: eleven millimetre decorative heads mounted on a continuous band, five one-metre lengths to a lot, in ten finishes from smooth brass through bronze, copper, silver and black to a flower-motif face. The shanks are set at a 1.4mm diameter on a fixed pitch, so the strip can be pressed into a tack rail or a wooden edge with the heads landing evenly spaced, without the drift that comes from hand-setting. The band holds the pitch; the installer only has to hold the line.

The material is iron with a plated finish rather than solid brass, which is what makes a five-metre lot affordable for a workshop that trims dozens of pieces. The plating sits on a polished substrate, so the smooth face reflects like a metal edge and the flower face catches light in a repeating pattern. For restoration work the finishes matter more than the metal: a 1920s club chair wants aged bronze; a modern headboard wants black or silver; a boudoir piece wants copper or the flower face.

The trim is the last thing done and the first thing anyone notices.

What You Are Actually Buying

✦  Continuous strip format: even head spacing on a fixed pitch, no hand-setting and no drift.

✦  Eleven millimetre decorative heads on 1.4mm shanks, sized for standard tack rails and wooden edges.

✦  Ten finishes: smooth or flower face in brass, bronze, copper, silver, black and blackgold.

✦  Five one-metre lengths per lot, enough to trim several chairs or one full sofa frame.

✦  Iron substrate with plated finish, so the metal cost stays workshop-affordable.

✦  Presses into a tack rail or softwood edge with a mallet and a flat block.

✦  Covers the staple line at the same time as it decorates the seam.

Where This Belongs

Upholsterers use it to finish the outside back and the arm panels of a chair, where the fabric has to be closed against a show-wood frame. Furniture restorers use it to replace a missing tack line on a period piece, matching the finish to the surviving original. Headboard and bed-frame makers run it along the perimeter instead of a piped edge, because it reads as metal hardware rather than as soft furnishing. Prop and set builders use the strip for trunks, flight cases and vintage-looking cabinetry, where the repeating head pattern does the period work that paint cannot. It also shows up in shopfitting, trimming banquette seating and display plinths that need an edge with weight to it.

Questions Worth Asking

Do I hammer each tack individually?

No. The heads are mounted on a continuous band at a fixed pitch, so you position the strip and press it into the wood or tack rail with a mallet and a flat block. The band sets the spacing; you only control the line.

Will it hold in hardwood?

The shanks are sized for softwood tack rails and upholstery frames. In dense hardwood, pre-drill pilot holes or run a staple through the band into the frame and let the heads cover the staple line.

Is the finish real brass?

The substrate is iron with a plated decorative finish. That is what makes a five-metre lot affordable for a workshop; solid brass strip in this format costs several times as much and is normally specified only for restoration work where the original was solid.

How much does one lot cover?

Five metres of strip. A dining chair outside back and two arms typically consumes around 1.2 to 1.8 metres, so one lot trims three to four chairs, or one sofa frame with a little spare.

Can the strip be cut between heads?

Yes. Cut with side cutters or a fine metal blade between two heads, then flatten the cut end with a file so it seats flush. Cut ends are normally hidden at a corner or under a return.

Will the colours match across two orders?

Expect up to five percent variation between production lots, which is normal for plated finishes. If a job needs one continuous run, order the full quantity at once rather than topping up later.

Great finish, order enough at once

The plating is good and the pitch is consistent. I topped up a second order later and the copper tone was a shade different. Buy the full length in one go for a single piece.

Headboard project

Ran it round a linen headboard instead of a piped edge and it reads as real hardware. The flower face catches light in a way the smooth one does not, worth choosing deliberately.

Cuts clean between heads

Side cutters between two heads and a light file on the end and it seats flush at the corner. No cracking of the plating at the cut, which I expected.

Even spacing without the tedium

Reupholstered four dining chairs and the strip gave perfectly even head spacing along every outside back. Setting these by hand would have taken an evening and looked worse. The bronze finish matched the original trim closely.
