Description

Off-grid power is a calculation, and the first number in it is how much of the sun that reaches a panel becomes current rather than heat. The monocrystalline module in this listing uses 166 millimetre cells behind tempered glass in an aluminium frame, and it converts at roughly twenty-four percent module efficiency. That number is where a solar project either works or needs a second panel.

The construction is deliberately unfashionable. A rigid panel with an aluminium frame weighs more than a flexible sheet and lasts far longer, because glass does not cloud and a frame does not delaminate. The laminate is waterproof and snowproof and resists small hail, the junction box carries pre-installed bypass diodes so a shaded corner does not collapse the output of the whole array, and a pair of twenty-four inch cables with connectors comes attached. The published service life is beyond twenty-five years, which is three to four times what a flexible panel typically delivers in the same position.

Two power ratings share the same build. The 120 watt module runs 36 cells at a maximum power point of 21.5 volts and 5.59 amps with an open circuit voltage of 25.4 volts, which suits a 12 volt battery bank through a standard charge controller and pairs naturally with a caravan, a shed or an off-grid pump. The 240 watt option doubles the harvest for a cabin, a boat or a workshop array where the roof area is fixed and the load is not. Both are measured under laboratory standard test conditions, and both are shipping as rigid modules rather than folding mats.

A panel is not a purchase. It is a twenty-five year commitment to the place where it is bolted down.

What Sets It Apart

  • ✦ Monocrystalline 166 mm cells with approximately 24 percent module efficiency
  • ✦ Tempered glass laminate that is waterproof, snowproof and resistant to small hail
  • ✦ Corrosion resistant aluminium frame suitable for indoor and outdoor mounting
  • ✦ Pre-installed bypass diodes in the junction box to limit losses from partial shading
  • ✦ Attached 24 inch output cables with connectors, ready for a charge controller
  • ✦ Service life beyond 25 years, three to four times a typical flexible panel
  • ✦ Two ratings on the same build: 120 W for 12 V battery systems and 240 W for larger arrays

Where It Belongs

A rigid monocrystalline panel is the component that decides whether a small power system is a hobby or an asset. On a caravan or camper roof it keeps a 12 volt battery charged through a controller while the vehicle sits, so the fridge is still cold on arrival. On a shed, a gate or a remote pump it removes a cable trench from the project. On a boat it tops up the house bank under sail. On a cabin, an off-grid workshop or a telecom cabinet the 240 watt option builds a real array from a fixed roof area. The frame and glass construction is also what makes the panel viable on a permanent installation rather than a temporary one, since it can be bolted to rails, cleaned with water and expected to still be producing decades later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What size battery bank will the 120 W panel charge?

A: It is designed around 12 volt systems, running 36 cells with a maximum power point near 21.5 volts, so it works with a standard PWM or MPPT charge controller on a 12 volt battery. For a larger bank, the 240 W option or two 120 W panels in parallel gives more headroom.

Q: Do I need a charge controller?

A: Yes. A charge controller belongs between the panel and the battery to regulate charging and prevent over-voltage. The panel itself supplies 24 inch cables with connectors, ready to terminate into the controller.

Q: Is it a flexible or a rigid panel?

A: It is rigid, with tempered glass over the cells and an aluminium frame. That build is heavier than a flexible sheet but it does not cloud, delaminate or need to be glued to a curved surface.

Q: What happens if part of the panel is shaded?

A: Bypass diodes are pre-installed in the junction box, so a shaded cell group does not drag down the output of the whole module. Some loss is unavoidable in shade, which is why partial shading should still be avoided where possible.

Q: How long will it last?

A: The published service life is beyond twenty-five years, which the listing puts at three to four times that of a typical flexible solar panel. The aluminium frame is corrosion resistant and the glass laminate resists water, snow and small hail.

Q: Can it be used outdoors permanently?

A: Yes. The construction is intended for permanent outdoor mounting on rails or a frame, and the data above is measured under laboratory standard test conditions, so real-world output will vary with angle, temperature and shade.

Still producing after two winters

Snow slides off the tempered glass on its own and I have had no hot spots even with a partial shadow in the morning. The panel arrived with the 24 inch cables and connectors already attached, so fitting took an afternoon.

Pair it with an MPPT controller to get the most out of it

With a basic PWM controller the output was noticeably lower than with an MPPT unit on the same panel. Not a fault of the panel, just worth budgeting for the better controller. Bypass diodes in the junction box do help with the shadow from my chimney.

The efficiency figure is real on a fixed roof

Running the 120 W panel through an MPPT controller into a 12 V bank in a shed. It keeps the battery topped up through the day even in winter light, and the aluminium frame bolted to rails without any flex. Glass rather than a flexible sheet was the right call for a permanent install.
